Located on a stunning but restricted site overlooking Griffin Bay on San Juan Island the build site for our North Bay Residence with is amidst three beautiful old growth trees. Trees being an essential element, a wrapping solution allowed for expansive use of water views while maintaining the conserved area as a space incorporated into the residence by architect Prentiss Balance Wickline.

The delineate concept is a stone wall that sweeps from the parking to the entry, through the house and out the other side, terminating in a hook that nestles the master shower. This is the symbolic and functional shield between the public road and the private living spaces of the home owners. All the primary living spaces and the master suite are on the water side, the remaining rooms are tucked into the hill on the road side of the wall.

Intricate use of material and space on a restricted site with extraordinary features, our North Bay home is recognized with NWAIA Merit Award.

The pavilion feature which grabs the views and the light, is positioned to be hammered by winter storms. While light and airy in appearance and feeling, the home is constructed of glass, steel, stout wood timbers and doors with a stone roof and a slate floor. The glass pavilion is anchored by two concrete panel chimneys; the windows are steel framed and the exterior skin is of powder coated steel sheathing. The lush living roof is covered with thriving native plants and sedums.

Located on Orcas Island, our Suncrest Residence sits among trees, rocks, ponds, and bald eagle nests. Designed by Heliotrope to minimize site disturbance and blend in with its existing pristine environment resulted in an award-winning residence. Merit Awards - AIA NW & Pacific Honor Awards & 2011 and AIA Honor Awards for Washington Architecture, 2010

The site for Suncrest, The Long View home is ecologically sensitive with bald eagle nests and trees prone to blight if disturbed with limited soil coverage over minimal over the native basalt, therefore stormwater management is a serious concern.

Suncrest
With goals to minimize site disturbance and blend in with the existing environment, our Suncrest Residence received NWAIA Merit Awards.

The build solution for the home situates the residence where the forest gives way to a large rocky clearing with panoramic views to the sea. The structure is 'wrapped' with curved walls around a prominent outcropping of rock and carefully situated to require a minimum of tree removal. Strict site access protocols were put in place for the duration of construction in order to minimize site disturbance, and the landscape has been carefully restored.

agosta house san juan island
A widely renowned San Juan Island Home designed by Patkau Architects, our Agosta House is located on a grassy meadow within a larger property enclosed by a fir forest on three sides. The 2,775 square foot home occupies the rugged and gently undulating site with panoramic views of the Haro Straight and Gulf Islands of British Columbia.

The structure consists of a combination of exposed heavy timber fir framing and conventional stud framing clad in painted gypsum board, all built upon a concrete slab-on-grade. Hot water heating is distributed throughout the house by tubing cast into this concrete slab. The exterior is clad mainly with light-gauge galvanized sheet steel which protects the structure from the normal effects of weather.

Agosta
The dramatic location and intricate aspirations of our Agosta House brought praise from industry, press and leaders including the American Institute Of Architects National Honor Award.

rainbow rock home lopez island
Rainbow Rock, on Lopez Island is a 3,725 square foot residence arranged along a central corridor set on a sunny waterfront lot. The project includes the main house, guest house and boathouse, designed by Balance Associates.

Granite, cedar and stucco-run from the exterior to the interior to reinforce the inside/outside concept. There is a large outdoor terrace on the south side of the house partially sheltered by a roof that becomes the cover for the living room. The living room is then enclosed by a window wall that has large, moveable doors that connect it to the terrace and outside. In contrast, solid forms of granite and wood give a sense of enclosure and shelter.
Rainbow Rock
The Rainbow Rock house blurs the distinction between indoor and outdoor space. Featured in various magazines, books and on The Travel Channel, this home's natural materials stand out, reinforcing the inside/outside concept.

If ever there existed a harmonious dialogue between wood and concrete, Ravenhill's Cady Mountain House on San Juan Island is a strong example of successful coexistence. Designed by Geoff Prentiss, Seattle Homes and Lifestyles awarded this project its Home of the Year. It was also recognized with a Northwest AIA Design Honor Award.

Three separate structures, the main home, the guest accommodation, and the sleeping cabin, are architecturally consolidated into a coherent project. An elevated bamboo platform stretches the length of the home's rectangular-shaped footprint to delineate a clear step into the various living spaces with polished concrete floors.
Cady Mountain
The exterior terraces of this home seamlessly link to the interior within the island mountain landscape. This project was honored as Seattle Homes and Lifestyles - Home of the Year - September, 2004 and with the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Honor Award.

Clerestory windows shaded by low shed roofs allow indirect light to illuminate the interior throughout the day, as the walls become the surrounding trees and foliage. Low sod roofs absorb much of the sunlight to control solar gain as it renders the house almost invisible in the landscape from a visitor's approach. The Cady Mountain House is a prime example of seamless indoor/outdoor living.
